St Johns Campus Costa Rica 2012

Day 5

Luke 9:16-17…Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and asked God’s blessing on the food.  Breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the people.  They all ate as much as they wanted, and they picked up twelve baskets of leftovers!

Today one of our ministry times was going to one of the worst parts of town (Tejarcillo) and serving food to the community.  Celebracion Church had prepared enough food for approximately 100 but over 200 people were fed!  This was the most people that had shown up for the feeding since they began serving meals to the community.

Over and over we see God’s provision when we need it the most.  We weren’t expecting that many people to come out for the feeding and as we were getting low on food the children kept coming.  God continued to multiply the food until every mouth was fed.  We are so thankful for His favor today in providing for His children.  We spent our afternoon working with the youth of F.U.S.E. picking up trash throughout the neighborhoods and the central park area.  We stopped at the same place we began our journey several days ago (the corner where the drug deals happen, prostitution and homeless live in the abandoned coffee fields).  Danny shared the history of this particular corner with the young men and women from the FUSE group – this was their home/neighborhood but they didn’t even know these things were taking place.  Later after that we went back to the church and joined several more kids from the neighborhood for the FUSE service.  We played JENGA, ball and many other games with them.  After the games Danny spoke to the group about the meaning of the “S” in the word F.U.S.E. (SERVICE).  It was a great word he spoke in Spanish/English for all of us.

Tonight we are all exhausted, worn out and sore and probably calling it an early night – tomorrow we will spend our morning in church serving in many areas and then painting in the afternoon.

The trip here has been memorable with many new experiences and new friendships.  We have enjoyed spending time with the gang from 6:8 and their families and look forward to returning in the near future.

Costa Rica ROCKS!  Jim
